Grades and Homework

At the Central Valley School District, students may be assessed through homework, in-school assignments, tests/quizzes, projects and class participation. Each teacher will inform students on how they will be graded for the school year. The students will be assigned percentage grades for their work.  Each grading period is nine weeks.

Students who score below a 50% on the first, second, and third 9 weeks will default to a 50% on their report card.  For the fourth 9th weeks students will earn the percentage they receive in the course.

The Central Valley School District supports the role of homework as a pivotal factor in the educational process.  Homework encourages and measures the development of self-discipline and associated good working habits.  Teachers may, at their discretion, vary the length of homework assignments depending on the nature of the topic being studied. 

• Highest Honors: 93–100%
• High Honors: 87–92.9999%
• Honors : 83–86.9999%

A percentage of 69% or below would eliminate students from consideration for honor roll. Students receiving an incomplete will not be eligible for honor roll until grade is completed.

Students are required to make up schoolwork if they are absent due to illness or other reasons. Teacher will prepare the work and set appropriate limits for the time that the work should be completed. If a student is absent from school, students/parents/guardians can arrange for schoolwork to be emailed through school email or Showbie. To request makeup work, parents/guardians should call or email the Middle School office before 9 AM.

Student report cards will no longer be sent home in paper copy at the end of each nine-week interval. All report cards can be accessed and printed via powerschool this school year. Any questions or concerns based on a report card should be addressed to the subject teacher. However, parents/guardians should not wait for a poor report card to schedule a conference to discuss academic problems. If there are concerns about a student’s progress, please notify the classroom teacher immediately.

The Central Valley Board of Education adopted a policy concerning weekly eligibility and nine weeks grades. This policy states that any athlete, color-guard, cheerleader or majorette who receives two failing marks in their subjects on the Weekly Eligibility Report will be subject to an immediate one week suspension from any activity of the squad.

Grade sheets will be run from Powerschool on Friday afternoon of each week and the current grade listed at that time will be used. The teachers of all their major subjects must evaluate those students participating in any of the above-mentioned activities each week. As stipulated above, a failing mark in two major subjects will bring about an immediate one week suspension from any activity of the squad.

The student will become eligible the following week provided he/she does not receive more than one failing mark on the eligibility sheet. The teacher evaluation will be based on the average score in the class at that time. Coaches and sponsors of the groups will be notified by Monday morning of any ineligible students. Their ineligibility will begin the following Monday and continue through Saturday.

All student-athletes must have a passing grade in all of their subjects at the conclusion of each nine-week report period. Failure to achieve this would cause the student to become ineligible for the first fifteen school days of the succeeding grading period.

Eligibility is in accordance with the bylaws of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and the policies of the Central Valley School District Board of Education
